Trivia Question❓

Which is the highest-grossing R-rated film in North America?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

A lot is happening around the Magic City this week — and plenty of reasons to feel good about our community.

We’re taking you inside a surprising new food destination tucked away in the Billings Public Library, checking in on the community coming together for the annual ALS Awareness Walk, and hitting the ice for a look at the new Signal Peak Ice Arena.

We’ll also introduce you to local high school students who are speaking up for a cleaner environment and trying to make a difference right here at home.

And if you’re wondering what to do this week, we’ve got you covered there, too. HarvestFest, the NILE, comedy, live music, fall festivities and more are filling up the October calendar.

Grab your coffee and settle in — here’s what’s happening around Billings.

This Billings Library Cafe Is Quietly Building a Loyal Following

One of Billings’ most unexpected dining destinations isn’t downtown in a trendy restaurant or tucked into a bustling neighborhood. It’s inside the public library, where a seasoned local chef is turning heads with creative lunch specials and increasingly popular $10 takeout dinners.

Tucked inside the library, Stomping Grounds Book Cafe offers a thoughtfully crafted dining experience that goes well beyond what you might expect from a library cafe.

Owner and chef Oscar Dorantes, a familiar name to some Billings food lovers, is at the helm. His culinary résumé includes time in the kitchen at The Fieldhouse and stints as executive chef at Buffalo Block Prime Steakhouse and The Granary.

Now, Dorantes is putting that experience to work in a more casual setting, drawing on his fine-dining background to create inventive weekly lunch specials and, perhaps most notably, his increasingly popular $10 Friday takeout dinners.

Every stride taken at ZooMontana sends a message that reaches far beyond the walking path.

Billings' annual ALS awareness walk has become one of the region's most powerful community gatherings, drawing hundreds of patients, caregivers, families, and first-time supporters into shared solidarity around a disease too many families know personally.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a relentless neurological disease that progressively destroys the nerve cells controlling muscle movement — stripping away the ability to walk, speak, eat, and breathe.

Now in its third year, the event has grown into a vital connector, linking newly diagnosed patients to support networks and the broader community to the latest ALS research developments.

Central to Billings' fight against ALS is its specialized multidisciplinary clinic — the only facility of its kind in Yellowstone County and one of very few across Montana.

Clinic staff champion a powerful philosophy: living with ALS is not the same as surrendering to it.

Local advocates echoed that message, reminding attendees that no one should face this diagnosis alone — and that community connection can make all the difference.

Something remarkable just happened in Billings, Montana — and the entire region is still buzzing.

The Billings Cattle Punchers opened to a sold-out crowd at the brand-new Signal Peak Ice Arena, marking what many locals are calling the most exciting moment in the city's sporting history.

The 70,000-square-foot facility — anchored by a six-million-dollar contribution from Signal Peak Energy — sits within the Amend Park Recreation Campus on Billings' south side.

Two full NHL-standard ice sheets serve the complex — a marquee rink seating roughly 2,000 fans, and a secondary sheet supporting youth programs, figure skating, curling, and sled hockey.

The Cattle Punchers compete in the North American Hockey League's newly formed Mountain Division, and head coach Steve Haddon says the new arena changes recruiting conversations entirely.

For a city that spent decades at the aging Centennial Ice Arena, open since 1982, this upgrade feels nothing short of transformational — civic pride finally given a proper stage.

More than 60 cyclists recently pedaled through Billings, Montana, for the fourth annual Ride for Their Lives — a 20-mile round-trip event connecting climate change to children's health.

Students, educators, and community advocates rode from the city's west end into downtown, where high schoolers took the mic to speak about biodiversity loss, air quality, and an uncertain future.

Their message was urgent and personal: the planet's health is their health.

Nationally, over 70 percent of young people report serious concern about climate change — and in Billings, that anxiety is fueling real action.

Advocates are pushing to expand bike lanes citywide, arguing every new trail means fewer cars idling on city streets.

Billings TrailNet has already secured full funding for the Stagecoach Trail, linking Rimrock Road to the Rims, with additional corridors like the proposed Yellowjacket Trail on North 27th Street in early planning stages.

Gaps remain dangerous — riders are still forced onto busy sidewalks without protected infrastructure — but the Billings-Yellowstone County Metropolitan Planning Organization is actively updating the city's Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan.

This growing civic movement shows a generation determined to reshape their city — and their future.
