Dozens Gain Life-Saving Skills at Billings Community CPR Training

Local residents enhance emergency preparedness through hands-on CPR instruction

On a brisk Saturday morning, over 50 Billings residents gathered at Rocky Vista University to participate in a free community CPR training session.

Among the attendees was Tammie Hoelle, who dedicated her morning to mastering infant CPR techniques, including chest compressions and rescue breaths.

For Hoelle, the motivation was deeply personal.

“I have grandchildren, so I thought it would be a good thing to learn,” she shared.

The session combined instructional videos with practical, hands-on training, ensuring participants left with both knowledge and confidence.

Josie Thompson, a CPR instructor with Basic Life Support, emphasized the importance of this approach.

“Rather than just learning the information, you get to practice on a mannequin,” Thompson explained.

“That can help build muscle memory and make you feel more prepared for a real-life scenario.”

Thompson highlighted that cardiac arrest can occur to anyone, regardless of age or gender.

“Having as many community members trained to perform CPR will save lives,” she stated.

According to the American Red Cross, immediate CPR can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival.

For Hoelle, the training was about more than just learning techniques; it was about gaining the confidence to act in an emergency.

“I think I will be better prepared mentally and try not to be too nervous… to have composure and be able to help somebody,” she said.

Organizers hope that more residents will take advantage of upcoming training sessions, fostering a community ready to respond when seconds count.
