Billings Holiday Heroes Rise From Storm Wreckage With Holiday Magic Intact

Display enthusiasts repair wind damage after 80-mph gusts threaten Christmas traditions

Nearly 80-mile-per-hour winds struck Billings on Wednesday, creating a holiday nightmare scenario just days before families begin their Christmas lights tours.

In the aftermath, devoted enthusiasts like Mark Bolt spent Thursday afternoon surveying the debris from his legendary Billings Heights display — a sprawling wonderland featuring over 82,000 lights that has anchored the community's holiday traditions since 2001.

The unusual weather pattern traced back to jet stream positioning that created sustained pressure differences across Montana's mountainous terrain.

This wasn't just any windstorm — it was the kind of severe weather typically reserved for areas near Livingston.

But the magic of Billings Christmas lights wouldn't be dimmed by nature's tantrum.

Bolt's determination mirrored that of other Billings Christmas light connoisseurs across the community, from Lockwood to the Heights, who refused to let the storm derail decades of careful holiday craftsmanship.

His nativity scene and signature joy sign bore the brunt of Wednesday's assault, with overstretched light strings snapping apart around 3 p.m. when gusts reached their peak intensity.

The cleanup marathon stretched from noon Thursday until 6:30 that evening — a six-and-a-half-hour restoration mission that would make any holiday light display perfectionist proud.

Meanwhile, ZooMontana faced its own battle with the elements during their spectacular Holiday Nights celebration.

The venue was forced to close Thursday as staff worked frantically to repair damaged fixtures from their massive light installation.

For brand manager Luke Ashmore — barely two days into his new role — the crisis became an unexpected team-building exercise that brought staff together during what could have been a crushing setback.

The zoo's 10 million dazzling lights represent just one piece of a much larger Billings holiday lights ecosystem that draws families from across Montana and Wyoming.

Local enthusiasts have created comprehensive Christmas light maps featuring 65 incredible locations spread throughout the Magic City and surrounding areas.

Billings Heights remains the epicenter of the most elaborate displays, with dedicated homeowners like the Cherry family operating 45-minute synchronized light shows that have evolved over 12 years of meticulous planning.

These aren't just decorations — they're labor-intensive works of art that require months of preparation and significant financial investment.

Despite Wednesday's chaos, both Bolt Christmas House and ZooMontana Holiday Nights successfully reopened their displays by the weekend.

With milder weather expected for Christmas, families can once again pile into cars for the annual tradition of cruising through Billings Christmas light displays without fear of severe wind interruptions.
