Little Free Library and Book Sharing in Billings Neighborhood

community support for the neighborhood library kiosk and book sharing kiosk

A cherished Little Free Library in a Billings neighborhood suffered damage this week, yet the community's swift response underscores the deep value placed on this beloved book-sharing kiosk.

Located at the intersection of Alderson Avenue and Fifth Street West, the neighborhood library kiosk was damaged around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The homeowner suspects an explosive firework as the cause, noting, "We heard a huge loud bang, and I look outside, and it looks like there's a fire and sparks flying everywhere."

Despite some books catching fire and burn marks inside the kiosk, the library remains operational. Neighbors have already contributed new books and offered assistance with repairs, demonstrating the community's commitment to this shared resource.

The homeowner emphasized the library's role in fostering connections, stating, "You meet new people. Our neighbors have come and talked to us. We've never had to restock the books since we've lived here."

Another neighbor highlighted the library's impact, saying, "Even though you may not necessarily always be directly interacting with people all the time, you are through the shared sharing of the books."

Residents describe the library as a hub of activity, with one noting, "Almost everybody stops. There's a million kids that come by and grab books and put things back. It's a big part of the neighborhood for sure."

While this isn't the first instance of vandalism—the nook was damaged a few years ago—the community remains hopeful. A local resident shared, "I don't want to be naive about that, but most of the time it hasn't happened here, and so I'm optimistic about that."

Another neighbor, who shares poetry and books through the Little Free Library, added, "It's important, a sense of safety in the neighborhood. It's absolutely wonderful."

The community's attachment to physical books is evident, with a local librarian noting, "We all want the physical books."

When asked if access to books is preferable to browsing the internet and social media, a neighbor responded emphatically, "One thousand percent, yes."

Billings police report no other calls about damage to little libraries. According to the Little Free Library organization, 94% of owners have only shared stories of small problems or no problems at all.
