Halloween yard decorations in Billings, Montana have moved well past pumpkins on the porch β€” and entire neighborhoods are now paying attention.

On Electric Avenue, one family has assembled a sprawling Halloween manor featuring roughly 180 props, including more than 50 large-scale Halloween animatronics that move, groan, and glow when darkness falls.

What started as a casual effort to attract trick-or-treaters has grown into a month-long production requiring weeks of setup and a five-figure investment accumulated over years of clearance hunting and full-price splurges.

The ambition is hard to overstate.

Rather than crowding props onto a single lawn, the family designed distinct themed scenes β€” each zone pulling visitors deeper into the experience.

The display earned first place in the Billings Halloween Decorating Contest, and traffic to the property has tripled in recent seasons.

Over in the Heights, a Caroline Street corridor has become one of the city's most anticipated Halloween destinations β€” so embraced by the community that the block earned its own identity.

One family anchors the street with a fully immersive haunted walkthrough display running from the front yard into a converted garage haunt, complete with theatrical scares and hundreds of full-size candy bars on Halloween night.

What began as a few handmade props a decade ago has become a full-scale annual production drawing visitors from across Billings.

Also turning heads is a Billings Heights display on Camel Place, where more than 100 animatronic characters pack a front yard, scale the roofline, and spring to life after sundown β€” growing more ambitious every October.

Billings is far from alone in this seasonal obsession.

According to recent reports, Americans are on pace to spend upward of $13 billion on Halloween, with decoration budgets now rivaling what households spend on candy β€” a cultural shift that shows no sign of slowing down.

For the families driving these displays, Halloween has become less about a single night and more about gifting the whole community something genuinely unforgettable.
