Something unexpected is happening in Billings, Montana β€” and it involves swords.

A homegrown fantasy experience is drawing readers, movers, and dreamers into the same room, blending immersive storytelling with a workout nobody saw coming.

Beyond the Chronicles, a Billings-based bookish event company, has built a growing reputation for turning fantasy literature into lived experience β€” and its Academy event at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center may be its most ambitious chapter yet.

The event centered on a shared love of fantasy books, bringing together a community that, until recently, had nowhere quite like this to gather in Montana.

That gap was exactly what inspired the founders to act.

After attending a fantasy ball out of state, one of the co-founders returned to Billings convinced the city was ready for something similar β€” a space where readers could step inside the worlds they loved most.

Now in its third iteration since launching in 2024, the Academy has grown into a full weekend of immersive fantasy experiences, complete with feasts, themed gatherings, and programming designed to blur the line between fiction and reality.

Among the most talked-about additions this year was a sword yoga session powered by WeaponUp β€” a discipline that fuses Shaolin kung fu principles, tai chi, and yoga into a single flowing practice performed with a sword in hand.

For many attendees, it was unlike anything they had tried before.

The class, sponsored by Visit Billings, required zero prior experience with swords or yoga β€” and that accessibility was part of the point.

Instructors described sword yoga as carrying a particular resonance for women, offering a sense of power and elegance that traditional fitness classes rarely deliver.

Participants drove in from surrounding communities, some having spotted the workout online and immediately adding it to their bucket list.

What they found surprised them β€” it demanded far more coordination and physical effort than the graceful movements suggested.

That pleasant challenge is part of what separates this fantasy book event from a standard literary gathering.

The movement element isn't a novelty β€” it's a bridge, drawing in people who might never have picked up a fantasy novel but who leave the weekend curious about the stories that inspired the experience.

The organizers say connection sits at the heart of everything they build, with a shared love of reading serving as the thread that ties the entire community together.

That spirit carries into their book club Billings residents can join between major events β€” a monthly gathering designed to keep the momentum alive long after the swords are put away.

In a city where community runs deep, Beyond the Chronicles is proving that fantasy isn't just something you read β€” it's something you live.
