Billings flood damage information for 'Pretty shocked': Weekend rainfall floods Billings streets and homes

A weekend of relentless rainfall has left Billings residents grappling with unexpected flooding, transforming familiar streets into waterways and encroaching upon homes. The deluge, which began Saturday, overwhelmed drainage systems and caught many off guard.

Stuart Shay, residing at the intersection of 17th Street and Colton Boulevard, found his property encircled by rising waters. "I was trying to fix the spots where it could breach," he recounted. "I got to the point when I couldn't really do anymore so I just started taking photos and video." His home became an island amidst the floodwaters, a sight he described as "pretty shocking."

The city's infrastructure struggled under the weight of the storm. Major thoroughfares like 24th Street saw significant flooding, leading to stalled vehicles and hazardous conditions. Hardin resident Anna Bellrock, who was in Billings during the storm, observed, "It was just like a river going down the road. I just could not believe how much rain there was and quick."

Despite the challenges, some residents found a silver lining. Bellrock noted, "We were pretty shocked, but I felt like it was an answered prayer too," expressing gratitude for the much-needed moisture after a prolonged dry spell. Shay echoed this sentiment, appreciating the rainfall but wishing it had been more evenly distributed. "I appreciate that we got moisture especially as dry as it's been," he said. "I would've been real happy to see it spread out across a whole day."

The National Weather Service had issued flood advisories for the region, cautioning residents about potential flash floods due to the heavy rainfall. As the community begins recovery efforts, local officials are urging caution and preparedness for future weather events.

This recent flooding serves as a stark reminder of nature's unpredictability and the importance of resilient infrastructure and community readiness.
