GPS dog collars and lost pet recovery in Should Billings mandate GPS collars for dogs? Pet owners weigh in

Exploring dog microchips and their role in reuniting missing pets

In Billings, the debate over mandating GPS dog collars has gained momentum, especially as social media platforms frequently feature posts about missing pets. Pet owners are increasingly considering advanced technologies to safeguard their animals.

Zoe Mentzer, a local resident, often walks her dog, Maggie. She recalls instances where Maggie's enthusiasm led to unexpected chases. "She likes to pull on her leash and sometimes yanks it out of my hands," Mentzer shared.

The prevalence of lost pet reports in the community has made Mentzer ponder the benefits of GPS collars. "I don't think it's a bad idea. I was actually disappointed when I found out the chip doesn't do GPS," she admitted. However, she anticipates potential resistance to a mandate. "I think they might be a little bit like, don't tell me what to do with a mandate, but that's Montana for you," Mentzer added.

At High Sierra Dog Park, another pet owner, Samantha Meeks, expressed support for the idea. "I think I'd be okay with that. It would be a lot safer for the dogs. Owners could find them a lot faster," Meeks said. She noted that while microchips are helpful, GPS collars offer a more immediate solution. "If somebody finds the dog, they can take it to see if they're chipped. If not, it's usually easier for the owners to find them if they've got a GPS on them," Meeks explained.

The discussion comes at a time when the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter has faced challenges. Following an incident in September 2025, the shelter announced its inability to house lost or homeless pets, leaving the city without a dedicated facility for stray animals. This situation has intensified concerns about pet safety and recovery in the area.

While there is currently no official mandate for GPS collars in Billings, the conversation continues. Pet owners are weighing the benefits of such technology against potential regulatory implications, aiming to ensure the safety and swift recovery of their beloved animals.
