Vandals Cause $3K Damage to Eagle Mount Billings Van

Community Rallies to Support Nonprofit After Costly Vandalism

Eagle Mount Billings, a nonprofit dedicated to providing recreational activities for individuals with disabilities, faced a significant setback when one of their vans was vandalized, resulting in approximately $3,000 in damages. The incident occurred on a Wednesday morning as an employee was en route to a group skiing activity. While refueling the van, fuel began leaking from the tank. Upon inspection at Willard’s Garage, it was discovered that someone had drilled into the gas tank the previous night. Executive Director Lynn Mullowney Cabrera expressed her frustration, noting, "There was a trail of gas the whole way down Broadwater." The repair costs are estimated at $3,000, with the organization's insurance covering all but a $1,000 deductible. The community's response has been overwhelmingly supportive, with many offering words of encouragement and financial assistance to cover the deductible. Cabrera highlighted the community's generosity, stating, "Thankfully, we're really close to having secured those dollars." The vandalism has disrupted Eagle Mount's operations, particularly affecting their ability to transport participants who use wheelchairs. The van, a 2014 Chevrolet Express, is specially equipped to accommodate these individuals. Repairing the unique fuel tank may take several weeks, though locating a replacement locally could expedite the process. Ed Melcher, owner of Willard’s Garage, explained the challenge: "Being a van and being a mobility van, it's a little bit different than a regular pickup or a regular car. We don't have a lot of them in this area like this, so we got to find that particular make and model to be able to put a new gas tank in there for them." This incident is part of a troubling trend of vandalism in Billings. Recently, a 19-year-old man was charged in connection with a "mass vandalism" spree that caused an estimated $40,000 in damages to nearly 100 parked vehicles. Additionally, the Billings City Council has established an anti-graffiti reward fund to combat the rising issue of graffiti vandalism in the city. Eagle Mount Billings remains committed to its mission despite this setback. The organization continues to rely on the support of the community to overcome challenges and provide essential services to those in need.
