Domestic violence awareness in Billings Montana

Insights from the recent domestic violence vigil and victim memorial

On Sunday, May 3, 2026, the Billings community gathered on the Yellowstone County Courthouse lawn to honor the life of Shawna Hart, a 35-year-old mother tragically lost to domestic violence.

Attendees, many wearing purple—the color symbolizing domestic violence awareness—shared quiet moments and tearful embraces, reflecting on Hart's vibrant spirit.

Her sister, Dominica Parsons, remembered Shawna as a loving person who was always there to help others.

The vigil was organized by Lily Aimone, founder of the Montana Domestic Violence Railroad and a survivor herself. She emphasized the importance of breaking the silence surrounding abuse, stating, "Staying silent is what abuse thrives on. So the more we can get loud, the more we can raise awareness to domestic violence and what we can do to help change it."

This gathering underscores the urgent need for community action against domestic violence. The Billings Area Family Violence Task Force, established in 1990, continues to coordinate resources and educate the public to reduce family violence. Their mission is to create a safer, more nurturing environment for all residents.

In the wake of this tragedy, local organizations are amplifying their efforts. The City of Billings Domestic Violence Unit offers support to victims of misdemeanor violent crimes, providing direct services and legal assistance. Additionally, the Montana Department of Justice's Office of Victim Services provides resources such as the Hope Card and Address Confidentiality programs to protect and assist victims.

Community events like the upcoming Billings Rotary Memorial Parade on May 23, 2026, serve as platforms to honor victims and raise awareness. This parade aims to bring the community together in remembrance and gratitude, emphasizing the importance of standing against domestic violence.

The collective response to Shawna Hart's passing highlights a community's commitment to confronting domestic violence. Through education, support services, and public events, Billings continues to strive for a future where such tragedies are prevented, and victims find the help they need.
