Highlighting Billings Mustangs and the rise of a Chicago White Sox prospect |
Justin Fuson has been a standout pitcher for the Billings Mustangs over the past two seasons.
Before the 2026 season commenced, his exceptional performance earned him a spot in the Chicago White Sox organization.
Upon receiving the news, Fuson immediately shared it with his mother, a moment filled with deep emotion.
"It's been my dream," Fuson expressed. "It's her dream too, and it was definitely emotional."
Currently, Fuson is training in the Arizona Complex League, awaiting assignment to a White Sox minor league team.
"I'm glad to be here and I believe in my stuff too and I believe that I belong here," he stated confidently.
Originally slated to pitch the Mustangs' home opener, Fuson's promotion altered those plans, much to the delight of his parents and host family.
"Oh, I was so excited for him," said Susie Wollenburg, his host mother. "I had to jump up and give him a big hug. You get a little teary because you don't want him to go, but you're just so excited for him."
The Wollenburgs, in their third season as a Mustangs host family, have supported nine players, including Fuson.
"It's just like one of your own kids," remarked Mark Wollenburg. "You want them to be better and you want them to excel at what they're doing. And this is what these guys live for is to go to the next level."
Fuson's journey reflects his dedication.
"He put in a lot of work," noted Craig Maddox, Billings Mustangs manager. "Especially this past offseason, he went to North Carolina, a place called Tread Athletics, and really cleaned up a lot of mechanical stuff."
Maddox highlighted that Fuson is the seventh Mustangs player to advance to a major league organization.
"A young man is chasing his dreams and comes here and puts in the work and then gets that opportunity," Maddox said. "And nobody deserves it more than Justin."
Before departing for Arizona, Fuson left a Pioneer League ball for the Wollenburgs, symbolizing his gratitude.
"Forgot his fishing stuff, so he has to come back here," Susie Wollenburg joked.
Fuson acknowledged the support he's received: "And they're rooting for me, and it's really cool to just have really good people in your corner."
His promotion underscores the strong connection between the Billings Mustangs and the Chicago White Sox, highlighting the opportunities available for dedicated players.
As Fuson embarks on this new chapter, the Billings community eagerly anticipates his future successes. |
