Discover The Pillagers Guide to Arctic Pianos and the excitement of the local event |
Kendra Langford Shaw, a dedicated member of the Billings City Council, is set to unveil her debut novel, "The Pillagers' Guide to Arctic Pianos," on May 12.
Shaw, who has been serving Ward 1, has been quietly crafting this story for over a decade.
"I've been secretly working on this novel for a decade," she shared.
"Even while serving on the city council, this is what I've been doing."
The novel has already garnered significant attention, earning a prestigious Kirkus Star and being featured in a prominent magazine last summer.
Shaw expressed her amazement at the recognition.
"It's really a dream come true. I've always wanted to publish a book," she said.
The narrative is set in an alternate Alaskan Arctic and follows the Spahr family living in a remote fjord.
As glaciers melt and sea levels rise, they discover a centuries-old piano preserved in the Arctic waters, sparking an economic frenzy.
Shaw's upbringing in Alaska and Montana heavily influenced the setting and themes of the book.
Born in Ketchikan, Alaska, and raised in Sitka before moving to Montana, she drew inspiration from both places.
"The setting is very much inspired by Southeast Alaska," she noted.
Her father's work delivering instruments to remote Alaskan communities also played a role in shaping the story.
"The image in my head was, what would have happened if one of his planes had gone down, but there'd been thousands of them that had gone down?" she mused.
The novel delves into themes of home, identity, and community, reflecting Shaw's experiences in local government.
"Is home just your family? Is home a place? Is home your house? Everyone defines it differently," she said.
After a decade of dedication, Shaw is excited to share her work with readers.
"It feels crazy and exciting," she said.
"I never really thought it would go so big, so it's been really exciting to see."
The book launch event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Art House Cinema and Pub.
The event is free and open to the public.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear Shaw read excerpts from her novel and participate in a book signing session.
